Omokoroa Background

|
Concerned residents formed the Omokoroa Pest Free environmental care group in October 2005. Their aim was to reduce the number of rodents on Omokoroa Point, thereby helping native wildlife re-establish. Older residents remembered a time when the point had much greater birdlife and sightings of lizards and weta were common. A number of public meetings were held to gauge interest, recruit volunteers and inform the local residents about the project. Further public meetings, regular articles in the Omokoroa Omelette and general networking has been used to keep residents informed about progress.
Methods used to achieve the aim: A core group of around 80 community volunteers laid tracking stations & bait stations in 4 stages Monitoring period: Every 2 weeks a team records information from the stations Timeframes: First begun in 2005, the pest control and monitoring is on-going Long term: An encapsulated Omokoroa Point ringed by bait stations to create a rodent free area and the return of native bird species to the area |
